Управляющие или Процессорные модули (Routing Engine, Supervisor) Cisco используются в маршрутизаторах или модульных коммутаторах для управления всей системой и увеличения производительности. Процессорные модули выпускаются под определенную серию маршрутизаторов или модульных коммутаторов и шасси, или также могут совмещаться с разными платформами одновременно (напр. Catalyst 6500 Series и Cisco 7600 routers).
В зависимости от платформы, модули управления Cisco могут поддерживать различные службы и сервисы, например качество обслуживания (QoS), сетевое управление, функции безопасности, динамическую и статическую маршрутизацию, коммутацию на разных уровнях модули OSI и много другое.
